PERIOD was started in 2014 in Portland, Oregon by Nadya Okamoto while she was still in high
school. During that time Nadya’s family was experiencing housing instability. Nadya spent two hours
per day commuting to school, bringing her into contact with some of Portland’s most vulnerable. The
girls and women she encountered were creating their own makeshift menstrual products as they
could not afford to purchase them in the store. With a new understanding of the effect of poverty on
menstruators, Nadya started PERIOD, a youth-led organization changing the narrative on
menstruation and fighting for menstrual equity.
PERIOD solves this community problem working to end period poverty through service, advocacy
and education. PERIOD does this by providing free menstrual products to menstruators in need by
partnering with community organizations through our global network of hundreds of PERIOD
chapters. Our chapters and their advocates gather menstrual supplies and distribute them to
menstruators and organizations in need in their local communities. As of early 2020, we have served
almost one million periods and have been active in all 50 states and many countries around the
world.
The items in this wishlist will provide menstruators most in need period products so they can be provided by shelters across the country. There is a major shortage right now, especially in the most marginalized communities.
